Dresses made from unconventional materials
During my senior year in college in my Experimental Design class, one project we were given was to create something using unconventional items.. I came up with the idea to convey contrasting ideas displaying both an organic look as well as a man made look that could be worn by the same women.
I accomplished my goal by constructing a moss dress with a graceful silhouette that incorporates twine straps. The waist is accented with flowers, and real turkey feathers, found from my grandmother's pasture. The second garment is made from synthetic plastic. I used a quilting yo-yo technique in order to make a belt out of grocery bags, to accent the fitted bodice. The middle of the yo yo's features safety pins, in star formation. I elongated the bottom of the dress for texture and movement.
Individually, these outfits each communicate a direct point of view, while harmoniously co-existing.
